The Rock

I love how today's Math & Science Library Time perfectly matched with this week's R for Rock homeschool unit. The librarian talked about foundations and stability...the kids used all sorts of blocks/tinker toys/Legos/cardboard paper towel tubes/straws to try to make towers and buildings, then tried to see which they could blow over and which would stand firm.

(I'm looking forward to every Thursday's Math/Science adventure at the library - those are definitely not my strengths! Even Samantha, who was technically too young to sign up for the class, sat there nice and quiet like one of the big kids the whole time!)

Then tonight after dinner, Ryan read the parable of the man who built his house on the rock vs the man who built his house on the sand from Matthew 7. Before he started, we asked the kids which house they thought would stand - they both picked the house on the sand! Then I introduced the song, "The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Sand." We'll review tomorrow, maybe add some hand motions to get them moving.

After reading, singing, and talking about how Jesus is our rock, Ryan took them both downstairs to examine our own cinderblock foundation. I'm not sure exactly what went on down there b/c I was stuck on the couch under the nursing babe, but I heard a lot of conversation and a lot of knocking.

Tomorrow, to finish out the Rock theme, we might make our first vinegar and baking soda volcano. Not sure what we'll use for the "rock" b/c we don't have clay, just Play Doh. Any more experienced moms / scientists out there have recommendations...?

  1. We built our volcano out of old mixed up colors of playdoh. It worked great.

  2. Way to go on an awesome unit study! Now I feel like a total failure as a homeschooler-mom... =P
